Email
Did you know you can set up a number of different email accounts
on your computer, if you use a program like Outlook or Outlook
Express? Even if you have only one actual mailbox, you can set
up accounts with all the same details but different "from"
names. This is handy if you have personal and business contacts,
and also if you wish to mail from different departments. When
people receive your email, they will see that it is from whatever
you put in the "from" field for that account.
Try doing this and then sending
emails to yourself to see how they appear.
Web
Browsers
You should clear out your internet cache regularly. If you surf
a lot, it can get very large and can affect the performance of
your computer if your hard drive is maxed out too far. GO into
your browser's settings and you should find something about caching
or "Temporary Internet Files"
Sending
Email to Multiple Recipients
You should always use the BCC field, not the CC field when sending
to multiple recipients, unless each recipient knows eachother.
The CC field will tell everyonewhat everyone elses email address
is. In no time you could all end up receiving penis enlargement
or miracle weight loss junk mail by the MegaByte.
Viruses
If you've ever used a computer for a long period of time you've
probably had an encounter with one of these nasty critters. Unfortunately
no-one is completely safe, just look at Telstra and their big
email problem caused by a nasty virus by the name of 'Swen'. Still
there's a few things you can do:
(1) get an antivirus program running
If you haven't got an good AV program, stop reading right now
and grab one! We recommend Norton & McAfee as reliable manufacturers
but there are a few others out there. To find out more visit the
Norton AntiVirus website
or McAfee's
VirusScan site...
(2) consider using a firewall
While many people know about anti-virus programs, firewalls are
not so common. A firewall is basically a program that screens
all incoming requests from the internet to make sure you only
receive things you've asked for. Windows has a firewall packaged
with it that you can learn
more about here or there are plenty of third party product
too, we again recommend Norton's
Personal Firewall.
Domain Name
Renewal Scams...
We hope that most of you know about this one, but just in case
here it is again. Basically there are companies out there who
send out notices that your domain name needs renewing and to send
them money. The letters look genuine and are very believable...but
don't send them any money! The only people you should listen to
are the ones who you originally dealt with...hopefully that means
us, or in the case that your domain name was organised independently
the company you went through.
Hey if you have any tips
and tricks, why don't you tell
us :-)
